The Electrical Tape Joke
They buy standard, thin black rubber flex cable, the exact same stuff you find on the back of a household extension lead. They drag it across the flowerbeds. Someone takes a hand trowel, scratches a shallow line in the mud, and kicks the dirt back over the wire.
Need to split it for a second light? They strip the ends, twist the bare copper by hand, lash a bit of cheap tape around it, and bury the lot.
It is completely illegal, and it’s a massive hazard.

Locking Out the Water
If you want landscape lighting in Bournemouth or Poole that actually stays on in a storm, you have to lock the water out completely.
We don't touch household flex cable under the soil. Every single main line we run uses Steel Wire Armoured (SWA) cable. It’s a thick, heavy-duty cable protected by a solid layer of galvanized steel wire. A spade won't cut it, and a fox absolutely cannot chew through it. We bury it at a proper, legal depth so it stays completely out of harm's way.
More importantly, we don't use tape for joints. We connect our cables inside a proper waterproof junction box. Once the wires are screwed into the terminals, ...we mix up a two-part liquid resin and pour it straight into the box until it's completely full.
The resin sets rock-hard around the wires. It turns into a solid brick of plastic. You could leave that joint sitting underwater in a muddy ditch for a decade and not one drop of moisture is getting anywhere near those live wires.
