It clunks back down when you step off it. You've just paid thousands, and you already have a massive trip hazard right outside the kitchen.
I get called out to fix this constantly. It happens because a lazy landscaper tried to make cheap stone look expensive. Here is exactly why your steps are moving, and the heavy-duty engineering required to stop it.
The Fake Overhang
When you are building patio steps, the riser is the vertical face and the tread is the flat bit you walk on.
Cowboy builders buy thin, cheap slabs. To make those thin slabs look like thick, premium blocks of stone, they pull the tread right forward so it hangs way out over the riser. Sometimes they leave a massive two-inch overhang.
It looks great in photos. In the real world, it’s a total disaster.
The Crowbar Effect
Physics takes over. When you step on a massive overhang, your body weight acts exactly like a crowbar.
You are putting eighty kilos of downward pressure right on the unsupported edge. That leverage rips the back of the stone straight up. It instantly snaps the weak mortar bed for steps underneath. Once that bond breaks, the slab is completely useless.

Solid Risers and SBR
We don't mess around with garden stairs construction. We build them like structural walls.
First, we build a heavy blockwork core for the risers. No hollow gaps. Then we cut the stone to fit properly. We enforce a strict, absolute maximum 20mm overhang on the treads. There is physically no leverage for a foot to snap the bond.
Finally, especially when we lay porcelain patio steps, we don't just drop the stone on wet muck. We paint the entire back of the slab with SBR slurry primer. It chemically locks the stone to the mortar bed. You could jump up and down on the edge of our steps all day long and they won't budge a single millimeter.
